What Is Medical Massage?
At Dunedin Well Spa, we specialize in more than relaxation. Medical Massage is a results-driven therapy designed to support recovery from diagnosed conditions.
As massage therapists, we cannot diagnose. However, if you’ve received a diagnosis from a physician, we can administer the appropriate medical massage protocol to help support your healing. To provide the best value, we offer 3-Packs of services after the initial service.
What Makes It “Medical”?
Medical Massage is not one single technique—it’s a targeted approach. Sessions are based on the goal of improving a diagnosed medical condition. Because recovery takes time, we strongly recommend multiple visits to build traction and develop a customized recovery plan.
While our service is titled Medical Massage, professionals call it Orthopedic Massage. This therapy can be self-appointed by the client, does not require a prescription, and is sometimes referred to as clinical or treatment massage.
Similarities Between Medical and Orthopedic Massage
Both include:
- An assessment and evaluation before treatment.
- A combination of advanced techniques—selected within the practitioner’s scope—to achieve specific outcomes.
What’s the Focus?
The focus is always to improve a medical condition. Common concerns we address include:
- Sciatica
- Back pain
- Shoulder & neck pain
- Headaches
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Golfer’s & Tennis Elbow
- Pickleball injuries
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Hip pain
- Shin splints
Treatment may include cupping, gua sha, stretching, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, muscle re-education, targeted vibrational therapy and techniques for releasing holding patterns.
How It Differs from Swedish or Spa Massage
Unlike Swedish or relaxation massage, which treats the whole body, Medical Massage sessions are focused and specific. Each treatment typically targets one to two areas of concern, allowing us to go deeper into correcting the problem.
Partnering in Your Recovery
At Dunedin Well Spa, we believe in blending care with results. Medical Massage is a partnership in your healing journey—and in conjunction with your physical therapist, chiropractor, or any other medical professional you decide to include in that journey.
